Washington man arrested for failing to register as sex offender |

On Feb. 22, at 10:14 a.m., Beaufort County Sheriff's Office deputies responded to Sandpointe Drive in Washington in reference to a report of a breaking and entering.While patrolling the area, Corporal Greg Rowe observed a suspicious truck on the shoulder of Turkey Trot #2, with a subject standing in the passenger side doorway. Rowe stopped and spoke with the subject to investigate whether or not the subject was involved with or had information about the break-in that had just occurred.
While speaking with the subject, Rowe learned that the man was a registered sex offender in Hertford County. The subject reported that he lived on Harvette Road in Washington and was a student at Beaufort County Community College. Two knives were recovered from the subject's pants pocket during the encounter. One of the knives was a folding knife that was in the open position.
Based on information collected during the interview, Rowe arrested Marcus Jerrod Mitchell, age 29, of Harvette Road in Washington, and charged him with two counts of Failure to Register as a Sex Offender and Carrying a Concealed Weapon. Of the two counts for Failing to Register, one was for failing to register his place of residence in Beaufort County and one for failing to notify Beaufort County that he was attending BCCC. Mitchell was brought before Magistrate Smith and held in the Beaufort County Detention Center on a $5,000 secured bond.
