Sheriff's Office, SBI and ATF investigating Bath church fire |

On Feb. 16, at approximately 6 p.m., the Beaufort County Sheriff's Office received a report of a fire at Christian Chapel Church of Christ on South White Post Road in Bath. Bath and Bunyan Volunteer Fire Departments responded to the scene and extinguished the fire. The building received minor burn and smoke damage as a result.
The fire departments began an investigation into the source of the fire and were unable to determine the cause. Fire personnel notified the Beaufort County Sheriff's Office of their findings and requested further investigation to determine the cause of the fire.
The Sheriff's Office secured the scene and began an investigation. The Sheriff's Office contacted the North Carolina State Bureau of Investigation and requested assistance from its specially trained fire-scene investigators in determining the source of the fire.
The NCSBI requested the assistance of the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives in the investigation of the scene. The scene was processed on the morning of Feb. 17.
The investigation into the cause of the fire is ongoing. Evidence collected from the scene will be submitted to the SBI Lab in Raleigh for analysis. Additional information will be released when available.
